  • He paints guitar cases with his best friend
Tell me about your hat.
My hat? Well, I am a huge Matt Maher fan and I didn’t really meet him last year, but I wanted to meet him this year. So I got my picture made with him last year at Notre Dame. So I saw him at Inspiration in St. Louis. So this year, my friend and I were at Wal-Mart shopping for the trip and we saw these two dollar hats and its actually suppose to be an ID where you can put your driver’s license or fishing license. So we thought it would be cool if we cut up pictures, and we were going to like put up baby pictures and stuff in it. But I thought, “What better a picture to put in there than me and my role model, Matt Maher?” So that’s why I got that in there.

That’s cool. Do you play music?
Yeah, I play a couple different instruments: piano, guitar, a little bit of bass, drums and stuff. And I play piano at our church and at Lifeteen.

You’re pretty involved. What’s life like in Fancy Farm?
Interesting, it’s fun. Not a whole lot to do really.

...I learned so much about Christ and why He put me here on this earth.
How many people live in the town?
That’s a good question.

How many kids go to your high school?
My high school’s like 1500 people. But that’s bigger than Fancy Farm. It’s a lot more towns. I guess I would have to say maybe a thousand or a couple thousand in Fancy Farm.

Are there a lot of Catholics in Kentucky?
Depends where you go. Fancy Farm is like a Catholic town. This town was built around the Catholic church. So pretty much everyone that lives in Fancy Farm is Catholic. At our high school, pretty much I can count all the Catholics on my hand. So I am pretty much out numbered there. But it’s cool; it gives me a bigger playing field.

What do you remember most from last year here at Notre Dame?
Here at Notre Dame probably was when I really grew close to God and to Christ and its where I really knew that God gave me the gift of music and He gave it to me to give back to Him and to do everything that I possibly could to give it back to Him. And last year was just a real eye-opener for me. I loved it so much. It’s where I learned so much about Christ and why He put me here on this earth. It means a lot.

So what has been your most memorable experience so far this year?
See last year when I came, I had a broken ankle so I didn’t get to get real involved. So I guess just being back here and really being myself and meeting as many people as I possibly can. Of course the praise that we had last night with all the music. So I really enjoyed all that.

Have you ever been in a fist fight?
With my best friend one time.

Tell me about it.
It’s kind of funny really. Me and him paint guitar cases for fun. We painted one for our priest. We are painting it and it’s like three in the morning or whatever and we were in his garage painting. And we were trying to decide whether we should spray it or brush it. And we got in a little argument and the next thing we know, we’re fighting. But then like two seconds later, we’re like, “why in the world are we fighting?” So it was more or less just a joke.

Was there any blood?
No, it was like a two second fight. We laugh about it now.

What are some random things about you that most people wouldn’t guess?
I can fit my whole thumb up my nostril. Would you like to see it?

What’s your most embarrassing story from high school?
I don’t get embarrassed a lot.

What do you do in school to stay involved?
I am president of our Fellowship of Christian Athletes club. I am on the AGAPE club, which is like our Christian club there at school.

Do you play any sports?
Yeah, I play soccer.

What position do you play?
I play goalkeeper.

Are you any good?
Yeah, I’m pretty good.

What’s your team’s record last year?
We like won fifteen and lost two. This year we should be really good, win regional and stuff.

How many bones have you broken since you were born?
It’s a lot. I’ve broken both bones that connect my elbow. So I guess that’s two there. I’ve fractured my wrist twice. And I’ve broken all my fingers playing goalie. And then I broke my ankle last year playing goalie.
