Do you play basketball?Yeah, that’s right.
Tell me about your basketball team.Oh, wow, much improvement on the basketball team. The high school where I am from, basketball has never been the headliner. This past season we actually won our first home playoff game in school history. That was pretty exciting.
And you’re the center?Yes sir.
...His gift was changing lives and my gift is playing basketball...
Do you consider yourself a leader on the team?I lead by example. A lot of the times I don’t really realize I am leading until the end of the game when someone says "You’re really helped me get through those problems on the court and helped me minimize my turnovers."
How has your Christian faith made you a better leader on the court?Well, Christ was a warrior and he stood for a lot of things and he challenged a lot of beliefs. He inspires me to play to the best of my abilities and he gave me the gift to play. His gift was changing lives and my gift is playing basketball.
What’s been the most difficult part of your faith up until this point?Wow. The most difficult part of my faith is probably letting go and letting God take control.
Are you a control freak?I really wish I couldn’t say that about myself. I really try to let things happen and let them be. But it gets mixed up between God’s will and my will.
Where do you think God is calling you in life?Great question. I have tried the whole dating thing and time after time it’s the same story. I ended up not being happy. And there is always a voice in the back of my head saying, “Steve, this is not what I want you to do.” So I would say more the vocational line, priesthood or brotherhood.
What would your basketball friends say if they found out you considered being a priest? They already know. So, it’s cool. Actually I say the prayers before every game. They enjoy that a lot. Every now and then I make it funny, every now and then I make it serious. We just go out and kick tail.
What is a random fact about you people wouldn’t know?People probably wouldn’t know that I cry a lot.
Are you a cry baby? Not a cry baby, but God’s love just over powers me and I can’t help but cry.
What’s been your most memorable experience here at the Notre Dame Conference? It would have to be last night at the praise and worship session when everybody was singing or praying their prayer to God out loud and all these different voices clashing. It was just a wonderful, wonderful sound of just focused on God.
What’s your favorite Cajun dish? There are a lot of choices, between the etuefae, jambalaya, and the gumbo. I have to say it might be my mom’s gumbo.
In an arm wrestle between Paul George and Steve Allgeyer, who would win?Steve Allgeyer would win because he has children. He has more to fight for.
Who’s your hero?God is my hero. Tough choice, it’s either the Virgin Mary or St. Benedict. I have to go down with JC.
