If you’re just starting college this semester, or even just another year of high school, you know one truth: life is hard. Homework, family, jobs... there’s a lot going on in our lives. And in the middle of all that we’re also supposed to be this holy shining example of Christ, right? Sometimes it can all seem like too much. The other week, I talked to a friend who was getting back into school. Summer ended, classes were beginning, and he still had to get a lot of stuff done for work. Overwhelmed was an understatement for this guy. I left that conversation wondering what I should have said to him – what was the right answer to give a friend? I spent some time reflecting on that, and here’s what I came up with. ...we need to remember who’s steering the bike. Just like that old cheesy song, we all need to remember that God is in control. He has a plan for us, he gave us the talents and gifts we use, and he’ll never test us beyond our limits with His grace. But let me shore that idea up with some realism. At some point we have to ride the bike – he’s not gonna push it the whole time while we keep our feet off the pedals. I’m not trying to sound harsh, but I think the metaphor of a bike is a great one for our spiritual lives when they get tough. A priest once told me that we’re not riding alone - we’re on a tandem bike with God. Our job is to pedal – pedal hard. But in the midst of all that pedaling, we need to remember who’s steering the bike. (Here’s a hint: it’s not us.) Hmm... looking back at this, I’ll admit it: it doesn’t make life simple and easy. It doesn’t take away your homework or football practice. But what gave me strength, gave the saints strength, and can give you strength is to remember to pedal hard.
