You Asked Bible Geek

Q: Is it okay for me to drink with my parents permission? What if they provide us with alcohol and let us drink at home? What if they even supervise, then is it okay?

It breaks my heart when I hear about how “cool” a parent is who lets their kid “do whatever they want” or when I hear that parents provide their children with alcohol or even drugs. Many people believe that if parents provide alcohol to a minor, in their own home, that it’s legal because it’s private property.

That’s not entirely true. Just because they’re on private property, does not make an act legal. If that were the case, O.J. never would have gone to trial…

Parents sometimes, in an effort to keep their children safe or in an effort to “treat their children as adults” will allow, and sometimes even supply their teenagers with alcohol. This is just wrong. If your parents do it or have done it, I’m not saying they are awful people, but they are wrong in doing so. Don’t take my word for it, though:

Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe (in me) to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” – Mark 9:42

Ask yourself this question again, but substitute God for your earthly Dad in this scenario, and Mary for your earthly Mom…would they give you alcohol? Can you see God taking car keys telling you to “drink up”? Can you see Mary tapping a keg? Absolutely not. Do you honestly think they’d encourage you to drink? How about some of your friends who might not be as strong or as responsible as you may be, would your Heavenly parents allow/encourage them to drink? Once again…absolutely not.
