Q: I know this isn't a Bible question, but i was hoping you could tell me who are the "Doctors of the Church"?
Well, you're right and wrong in saying that this isn't a Bible question. You're right because the Doctors of the Church are not listed in the Bible. I'd say "you're wrong" (sort of), however, in saying it's not a Bible question, for this reason...Not one of these saintly men or women would have attained such intimacy or depth with Christ on this earth, had it not been for prayer and both the Sacraments and Sacred Scripture. ...if you want to be a doctor, but you stink at science...there's hope for you, too! That is not to say that an illiterate person, for instance, could not come to know and love God. No, what I'm saying is that after studying the lives of every one of these incredible men and women - saints who were so wise in the wisdom of God that they were given the title of "doctor of the Church" - I can honestly tell you that every single one of them had a profound love for God and a strong love for His Living Word, Jesus, and the Incarnate Word, Sacred Scripture. There are only thirty three saints who have been declared a "Doctor of the Church (a distinguishable honor to say the least). In order of feast days (not importance), they are:St. Basil 1/2St. Gregory Nazianzus 1/2St. Hilary of Poitiers 1/13St. Francis de Sales 1/24St. Thomas Aquinas 1/28St. Peter Damian 2/21St. Cyril of Jerusalem 3/18St. Isidore 4/4St. Anselm 4/21St. Catherine of Siena 4/29St. Athanasius 5/2St. Bede, the Venerable 5/25St. Ephraem of Syria 6/9St. Anthony of Padua 6/13St. Cyril of Alexandria 6/27St. Bonaventure 7/15St. Lawrence of Brindisi 7/21St. Peter Chrysologus 7/30St. Alphonsus Liguori 8/1St. Bernard of Clairvaux 8/20St. Augustine 8/28St. Gregory the Great 9/3St. John Chrysostom 9/13St. Robert Bellarmine 9/17St. Jerome 9/30St. Therese of Lisieux 10/1St. Teresa of Avila 10/15St. Leo the Great 11/10St. Albert 11/15St. John Damascene 12/4St. Ambrose 12/7St. John of the Cross 12/14St. Peter Canisius 12/21St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower) was the last saint to be named a "Doctor of the Church". She was "promoted" by His Holiness, John Paul II (the Great) in 1997. She is one of only three women to be declared a doctor.Although she wrote about her difficulties in "understanding" complex theology, her "Little Way is considered a work so brilliantly complex in its simplicity, that she was the only "doctor" named during JPII's entire Pontificate. So, if you want to be a doctor, but you stink at science...there's hope for you, too!
