You asked Bible Geek

Q: I have a ton of questions about saints. My friends who aren’t Catholic are saying it’s bad and even sinful to pray to saints. They’re saying that there’s nothing special about saints that their stories aren’t true and that the Church makes up stuff and that saints are no more important than anyone else. Why do we pray to them? Why do some have such random things they’re patrons of? Why do some bodies not decompose? What is a halo, exactly? What are relics? Why does the Church let our attention be put on saints and off of Jesus?

A: Just to set the record straight…saints are not more important than Jesus. The Church has never said that, taught that or thought that. If someone claims that, tell them to show you where…’cause it ain’t true.

LIFE TEEN Presents "Spread the Word"
People who drive me crazy…

Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor.” - Romans 12:9-10

Situation Explained
Who in your life drives you crazy and what do you do about it?

Solution Offered
I had “one of those weeks” last week. Every day seemed to be more challenging than the one prior. Each day seemed to push me to the very limits of patience and Christian charity.

I had “one of those weeks” last week.
It got to a point where I literally was creating “a list of people I cannot stand”…

Including:

Ushers who mercilessly cram Mass-goers into pews like cattle into a barn.

Strangers who felt at liberty to rub my wife’s pregnant belly. “Um, hi stranger, that’s called assault.”

Cashiers and food servers who consistently offer me pens that no longer work.

People who consider themselves an expert on anything…especially relationships.

Delivery people who don’t check the order before showing up at the door.

Postal workers who disappear into the “back room” right before my number is called.

Front-counter workers who accept calls from customers while I (who actually drove there) stand in line in front of them, waiting to check out.

People on airplanes who wait for you to move and then steal the armrest.

Anyone who refer to himself in the third person.

Drive-thru attendants who don’t put a straw in the bag.

Hospital workers who apparently think “emergency” means “I’ll be with you in four hours”.

People at Mass who treat the preparation of gifts like it’s halftime…”Hey pal, if you can’t “hold it” for one hour, stop drinking so much water before you come in!”

People who complain about all the people who annoy them…(yes, I get the irony).

I was feeling pretty valid in my complaints. I was feeling pretty good about myself, too.

Then I made the mistake of opening my Bible. The Holy Spirit had some fun with me. He led me right to St. Paul, whose saintly words kicked me right in the rear…right where I needed it.

These words from Romans are as true today as they were 2000 years ago. They are timeless because they are true. This verse from Romans - this is what it means to be a true Christian.

It doesn’t mean you don’t get annoyed…it means you love anyway.

Blessed Mother Teresa had something similar to say. Many of you have probably already read it. Rather than sharing my annoyance, I’ll share her brilliance:

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Love them anyway!?

If you do good, people will accuse you?of selfish, ulterior motives.? Do good anyway!?

If you are successful, you will win?false friends and enemies.? Succeed anyway!?

The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow.? Do good anyway!?

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.? Be honest and frank anyway!?

What you spend years building may be?destroyed overnight.? Build anyway!?

People really need help? but may attack you if you help them.? Help them anyway!?

Give the world the best you have?and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. ?Give the world the best you’ve got anyway!

This is why Blessed Teresa of Calcutta will be forever known as a saint. She did what the Scriptures challenge us to do: she loved in practical ways.

She anticipated others in showing honor. She loved with mutual affection. It was her love that changed people’s lives, not merely her service. It was the love behind the service. She sought to see Christ in everyone – even those who annoyed her.

It’s not that Teresa (or any of the saints before her) never got annoyed…it’s how they handled that annoyance and how they viewed it that made them saintly.

You and I have the same challenge each and every day. God’s gonna put people in your path today that will annoy you…love them anyway.

Salvation Given
Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor.” - Romans 12:9-10

The truth is that you might be the “annoying one” God puts in the path of others today…let’s hope they have read Romans, too.
